ask your prescriber for more information

i tend to avoid tv for the most part, but sometimes i’ll find myself bored and flipping through the channels or watching an episode of jeopardy with my gf. during the show last night there was an advertisement for some drugs for some minor annoyance or other. during the commercial the voice over said “ask your prescriber for more information”

the use of the word “prescriber” really bothers me. i feel like they are diminishing the role of a doctor as care giver and advice giver and instead are making them seem like prescription robots. your doctor should be discussing medications with you, and not always with then intention of giving you one. i really feel like this country is drug crazy, to the detriment of humanity on the whole.

it goes along with those new super virii that have been in the news lately. you know, the ones that are drug resistant, stronger, and better at infecting humans and spreading themselves. the ones that have developed because of our overuse of antibiotics and other medications. i was also reading an article the other day talking about the abnormal rise in food allergies amongst young children recently. the authors posited that it might be due to our being “too clean” and the fact that many babies are born by cesarean section now and miss out on a lot of the “messiness” of the birth canal, thereby sending their immune systems into overload when they are growing causing food allergies.

i’m not some crazy nutjob who thinks that all medicine is bad or something. i really do believe in science and medicine and i think it is clearly in our best interest to be able to take care of our bodies and keep ourselves healthy, but it should be done with a large amount of foresight and thought. i realize the public appetite for new medications and treatments is really high, but shouldn’t those people who are the gatekeepers to our health be concerned with the long term effects?

  1. I agree. It seems that drug companies and some doctors are throwing pills at patients. My assumption is that there are many federally aided prescription programs that are paying the drug manufacturers. Drug companies court hospitals and doctor’s offices like Patrick Dempsey in “Can’t Buy Me Love.” The doctors of these hospitals and practices are essentially sales people themselves. uh…i tend to ramble, so if that doesn’t make sense just remove it. :)

no you totally made sense there. it’s been a long standing practice of the drug industry to give out free shit at doctor’s offices. but to me this new idea of relegating doctors to prescription monkeys is even worse.

  2. You guys really need to come up and try our free health care. Competition stops above the headache, cold, and flu ailments. There are no drug companies lobbying for you to carry their drug at a hospital (that I know of, anyway) – that thought actually scares the shit out of me. At our hospitals, you get what you need, period. Yay, universal health care.

that’s an interesting thought. i’d never really thought about the affect universal health care would have on pharmaceutical companies. i’m sure the don’t really like the idea. i wonder if that has anything to do with the problem we seem to have providing that service to our citizens.

I just did a google search for “ask your prescriber”. I was looking for which drug company was using that terminology and this blog is the first hit. (Congrats!).

Anyhow, I think doctors these days actually are “prescription monkeys”. I suspect this commercial is to remind them of that and let them know the pecking order.
Do you remember which drug company it was?

    Rant:
There really isn’t any doctoring going on anymore, if your problems/symptoms can’t be controlled (not cured mind you, that just can’t happen) with a prescription, then there is nothing wrong with you! or you have a psych problem or you’re a drain on the medical insurance companies and should have your insurance cancelled.
