There is that last time always

It's a photo of what appears to be a father holding the hand of their child, but it's their shadows not the actual people. The shadows are elongated a bit. The ground is wavy yellow sand.

Walking with my kid today, home from school, and they reached for my hand while we walked. I had that moment of fatherly love when their hand found mine. Then I had that moment of "This could be the last time they reach for us. This could be the last time a handhold provides me a moment of joy."

But that feeling passed and I just enjoyed the weather, the walk, and their unending commentary on what they did, what they saw, what they thought.

A good afternoon to remember that there is always the last time for everything.
